- 1988 - The Office of Minority Student Affairs, located in the Sitterding House basement was founded in response to intense lobbying from African American students.
- 1996 - Due to the growing number of Latinx and Hispanic students attending VCU and their need for culturally relevant support resources, the Office of Minority Affairs revised its goals and scope to include more underrepresented ethnic groups.
- 1998 - Office of Minority Affairs was renamed Office of Multicultural Student Affairs
- 2004 - OMSA relocated to a newly designed office in the University Student Commons
- 2006 - OMSA expanded its scope by offering programs for women-identified students and students who identify as LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual)+
- 2015 - OMSA and Residential Life and Housing partnered to develop and implement several diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives for the VCU community, including the Lavender and Mosaic Living Learning Communities.
